Green energy: Why do we need novel bio-based fuels?

The global demand for energy is accelerating due to the increase in the world population. All sectors of the economy require energy. Currently, fossil fuels are the main source of energy. However, due to the effects of CO2 on the environment, along with global energy issues, replacing fossil fuels with efficient alternatives has become a necessity.

The shift from fossil-based to bio-based fuels, originated from biomass residues, can greatly reduce industrial costs and, more importantly, greenhouse gas emissions. They have a high energy generation potential and, the best part, they do not compete with the ecosystem chain, as their raw material comes from waste, especially from crops from agriculture, forestry and agro-industry.

In this context, one of the most advantageous alternatives is the conversion of biomass into bio-pellets and bio-briquettes.

First of all, they are obtained from renewable source, they are also cost-effective, do not emit sulfur, therefore, they are unable to pollute the environment, have a higher calorific value than other solid fuel sources, ash content is much lower than coal, its combustion is more uniform compared to coal, among others.

The transport and handling of these biofuels is also extremely safe and easy to manage, especially when compared to fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum products, as the biomass is completely non-toxic, being entirely obtained from plants.

Due to advances in technology of production along with smarter combinations of biomasses, the performance of novel bio-briquettes and bio-pellets are reaching very high levels. Improvements in weather-resistance, like reduced water absorption and increased mechanical strength, are observed. These advances also reflected directly in their energetic efficiency, due to the higher density combined with more potent biomasses, the bio-briquettes and bio-pellets are reaching calorific values close to 30 MJ/Kg (around 7000 kcal/kg).

In addition, bio-briquettes and bio-pellets produced with innovative techniques using selected biomass are an excellent sustainable solution for reducing energy-related budgets due to fluctuating exchange rates and commodity prices.

Regenera has studied different combinations of residual biomass, as well as new technologies for increasing the energy density of bio-based solid fuels, with raw materials that do not compete with other sectors. Our solutions are developed by 100% Brazilian technology, from widely available plant raw materials, in a process created exclusively by Regenera. It is sustainable, renewable and with guaranteed supply throughout the year.
